Vector vs. Photo Editing Programs
One of the most common questions asked by new designers is, which programs are more effective for graphics design? The answer is, both vector and photo editing type of programs are good and many graphic artists use regularly. Although some artists are more comfortable using one or the other, you can use both easily. You can for instance, draw the preliminary sketch on paper and then draw the graphic on a vector program. Unlike paper and photo editing software, you can scale and rotate your drawing without any distortion.
Once you’re satisfied with the design and size, you can save the graphic file and open it in a photo manipulation program, or just copy-paste it. Either way you’ll be able to combine it with other elements or use your photo editor’s filters and tools to make refinements.
Careful with the Typefaces
If you’re creating a logo, pay close attention to the typeface and make sure that they’re not too light or thin. You’ll also have to remember that there are many kinds of computer monitors and this will have a direct effect on how the graphics comes out. In other words, you need to choose the typeface carefully or create a custom one. If you decide to create one, don’t try anything too fancy since those things tend to get outdated very quickly.
Whether you create one or choose a preexisting typeface, don’t lose track of its purpose, and that is, to be readable and legible. The one thing you need to avoid is the gimmicky fonts that you can freely download on the Internet. There’s a reason why they’re free – they’re used everywhere already and look cheap. If you want your graphic design to look sharp and professional, use a typeface that conveys professionalism. When it comes to typefaces and fonts, the classic and simple ones are the best. Finally, don’t forget to try and match the font with the brand, as that will make all the difference down the road.

There’s no need to include every new technology on your website, as your goal should be to make it easy for visitors to find information. Web design features and technologies should be used to make things easy for the user, not to show off. If you don’t need to include ActiveX controls, Java, Flash etc., don’t use them. In fact it’s a good idea to limit the plugins that your website requires because if your visitor doesn’t have it, they’ll need to download the plugin to access that feature on your site, and that can be irritating.
2. White Space is Necessary
Another common mistake made by website designers is trying to cram as many features on the site as possible, believing that it’s all about information. Yes you need to provide visitors with facts, but overloading your website defeats the purpose. Look at some of the most popular websites today and you’ll see that there is plenty of white space on each page.
White space or empty space is as important as the design that’s on the rest of the page, because it provides visitors with a place to “rest” their eyes from the visual stimulation the text and graphics provide. 3. Layout Considerations
Before you put anything on your site, think of the layout and to be more specific, where to put your company logo, the content, white space, call to action and so on. A web design program will supply you with the template, but it’s still up to you to decide which part goes where. Again, it’s very important that you give your site visitors room to breathe, and that by simply looking at the homepage they’ll quickly get an idea of where the links are, the search button, contact info and so on. When it comes to layout, the simple approach is often the best.
Your layout will look cleaner and more professional if you don’t use the primary colors like yellow, red and green and instead use lighter shades. Finally, make sure that the background color contrasts nicely with the text so they’re easy to read.
